Hello Again:
I am very new to car repair. Against my best efforts it has taken a while to get the info I needed to do the work so my valve cover has been off for some time. Long enough for the oil to go from wet and pale to dry (but not flaky) and dark. The engine is covered with a trash bag to keep out dust and the hood is closed. Is this something I need to worry about or cleen* out before I put things back together or will the dryer oil re-liquify once I add some oil and heat up the engine?
*had to spell it that way to prevent the word from being replaced with a different word

I would personally soak up as much of the old oil underneath the valve cover before starting the engine again. Use some highly absorbent paper towels (not the 99c type though that'll tear and flake off into your engine, haha), and soak up as much as possible, then refill with new oil. Make sure to only do this when you're ready to put your valve cover back on though as the oil over the valve train will stop the parts from seizing and rusting.

The crankshaft just get a braker bar put it on the nut and turn it clock wise so you don't crank it up dry
