From a cold engine...set up the ramps and ramp it up!! THat would be enough to warm up the engine without reaching operating temperature...if it does, let it cool down. You want the temp needle just off the "C" but not towards the middle of the temp range. Disconnect the battery to be safe!!
Remove that CARB filter and wrap your carb with saran wrap (food clear plastic wrap). You may also want to cover your starter, distributor and alternator...make sure you do not crack the plastic during installation as water can enter that component.
You should keep the hose preassure very low to prevent water intrussion under the spark plug boots...either way after you are done washing the engine, remove the boots and verify there's no water surrounding the spark plugs...if so, dry them before starting. If it hesitates, remove all plugs allowing the small amout of water into the chambers and dry reinstall the plugs...the hesitation will stop a few minutes later after the water has been cleared from the chambers.
You will need the following items:
1. Paint or parts stocker brush, short (standard handle) and long handle.
2. Make a selection of the following...2 cans of degreaser, ONE bottle of :Simple Green" OR ONE bottle of "Grease Lightning" engine stocker.
3. Bucket with hot water and plenty of dish washing soap
4. Scrubbing pad/sponge just in case.
5. Towel
I suggest disconnect your battery as a safety precaution!
Follow this steps:
1. Spray to a complete SOAKED engine with the selected product over the warm (NOT HOT) engine and let it work into the grease...in the mean time...get the bucket full of hot water!
2. Mix a lot of dish washing soap with HOT water.
3. Get the paint brush and start scrubbing!!
4. Thick walls of grease??? Remove with spatula or flat tip screw driver!!
The water hose should be available and at low preasure...as the engine and water are warm, it tends to dry a little faster...use the water as needed to remove the soap you just scrubbed onto the engine to prevent soap stains. Stay away from the exhaust manifold as much as possible.
Try an reach every where you can.
Increase water preasure and hose off everywhere there's soap or was scrubbed on.
After the wash is done, you may have water intrusion thru the spark plug boots. Remove each boot and dry with the towel by using a screw driver. If there's a pottle of water trapped surrounding the spark plugs, try to dry all you can, then remove the plug and allow the water to enter the chamber; dry the plugs...after you start the engine it will disipate all that water and moisture. Engine may feel hesitant for a few minutes.
Good luck!
