I have a 95 Corolla with a 4afe auto, I have had this problem ever since I got the car. Idles fine, only sputters when you hit the throttle. Just replaced timing belt, cam and crank seals, pwr steering pump, made sure that all timing marks were lined up. Still runs the same, replaced plugs, wires, pcv, fuel filter a couple of months ago. I don't drive this car alot untill recently I parked my 89 corolla gts for some much needed tlc. I can advance the timing and be able to drive the car, but only babying the throttle, no hard throttle or it will sputter. I am looking to install a set of ngk wire with in the next week or so. I am hoping that takes care of it. Any info on what it might be causing the problem would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to check out the exhaust system might be clogged .... A plugged exhaust system will cause excessive back-pressure and the exhaust gasses will not be efficiently removed from the cylinder, diluting the intake mixture and causing poor power production

It shouldn't be the wires because bad set of wires will cause a rough idle and fluctuating vacuum .. You have a good idle

Other then the exhaust sytem you just might have a bad distributor , but the only thing that sucks is you go through all of this to trouble shoot and it doesnt get cheaper

Thanks for all the input guys. I didn't like those anyways. I checked the plug cap and they were off, so i set them to 0.032. Installed the new set of NGK wires, better but still there at the higher rpms. Exhaust flows just fine, i am leaning towards the distributor being the problem, because i still have to advance it to keep it from sputtering all the time......

Well made it to the junkyard and picked only the distributor, i installed it today and set timing by ear. (Have to find my timing light) took it for a test drive and that took care of the problem....thanks everyone for your input on this..
